Music Classes Offered at BHS
The Beaverton High School Music Department offers a huge array of music courses. To join, simply forecast for one of them with one of your elective options. Continue reading to learn more about each course.
Concert Band
Concert Band is a performance class for beginning and intermediate wind and percussion instrumentalists. No audition or prior experience is required, however some experience reading music is strongly recommended. The class will introduce and review playing fundamentals and the rudiments of music theory. Members perform at school concerts, graduation, and at select pep events and sporting events.


Symphonic Band
Symphonic Band is a performance class open to experienced wind and percussion instrumentalists. No audition is required, however students are expected to have multiple years of experience on their instrument. The class will develop and refine playing fundamentals and music theory understanding. Members perform at school concerts, graduation, festivals, and at select pep events and sporting events.
Wind Ensemble
Wind Ensemble is an advanced performance class. An audition with the band director is required for enrollment. Members are expected to understand the fundamentals of their instrument and music theory. The class will focus on advanced performance and musicianship. Members perform at school concerts, graduation, festivals, and at select pep events and sporting events.


Jazz Ensemble
Jazz Ensemble is a performance class open to experienced instrumentalists on the saxophone, trombone, or trumpet. An audition is required to join the rhythm section (guitar, bass, piano, and drum set). Emphasis is placed upon the study of jazz materials and techniques. Enrollment in another ensemble in addition to Jazz Ensemble is not mandatory but strongly encouraged. The Jazz Ensemble will perform at concerts, festivals, civic events, and special activities as part of the class work.
Other Band Classes Offered
Instrumental Music Studio: Instrumental Music Studio is a music class intended for beginning and intermediate musicians. In this course, students learn to play one or multiple new instruments and learn the rudiments of reading music, writing music, and understanding music theory. Piano, guitar, ukulele, & limited focus on wind instruments are available. Some school owned instruments are available for students in need.
Music Production: Music Production is a music class intended for musicians and music makers of all levels and abilities. This class allows students to create and arrange music by applying basic techniques used in music production software. Students learn the rudiments of music and songwriting, analyze compositions for musical elements, and transfer those skills to their own compositions using a Digital Audio Workstation, or DAW.
